EARLIER THIS EVENING, President Barack Obama addressed the people of the US for the first time after Donald Trump’s election victory.
Accompanied by Vice President Joe Biden, he said he hoped the transfer of power went as smoothly as possible, and spoke of his pride in Hillary Clinton and the nature of democracy.
I have said this before but I think of this job as being a relay runner… You take the baton, you run your best race, and hopefully you’ve made a little progress.
One particular moment from Obama’s speech is proving to be a comfort to those in need of some – at one point, he said: “I’ve lost elections before. Joe hasn’t.”
Biden blessed himself, then popped over Obama’s shoulder to say:
Remember, you beat me badly.
Then, at the end of his speech, the pair wandered off arm in arm.
This little moment of comic relief cheered quite a few people up, at least for a few minutes:
